I found an article online, but I have to pay to access it. What should I do?

Although most publishers will allow you to browse and search their journal articles for free, oftentimes they will want you to pay for full-text access.  To see if the library has the article you need, do the following:

  1. Check Google Scholar
    • Copy the title of the article
    • Paste it into the search box on Google Scholar and search
    • Click on the link to Get It @ Madigan Library*
Tip:  If you don't see the link to the right of the article citation, try clicking on the double right-hand arrows in the menu across the bottom to expand the line; the link may be hidden there.
    • If the library has access to the article, the page will include a link to the full-text; if the library doesn't have access, you can request a copy from interlibrary loan.
  2. Check the Library's Resources
    • If you tried Google Scholar and the article wasn't found, or the link to Get It @ Madigan Library was missing, then you can try to find it this way.
    • Go to our Article Search page and enter as much information as you can about the article and search.
    • If that does not work, then you can submit an interlibrary loan request from your library account.  Be sure to fill out as many fields as you can, paying particular attention to those that are required.
